Slips and falls can happen in any work environment and these incidents may result in severe injuries if people do not take precautions. There are several things that workers can do to protect themselves at work.

Many of the situations that cause slips and falls result from human error. Environmental Health and Safety Daily Advisor says that many falls happen because of clutter. Many people may trip on extension cords and tools if their colleagues leave these materials in walking areas. Additionally, people may trip over open drawers. Papers on the floor may cause people to slip.

Dangerous surfaces

Wet floors may also cause accidents. If people do not clean up spills, their colleagues may slip. Sometimes, the condition of the flooring can result in accidents. Flooring usually wears out over time. Tiles may crack and carpets may tear. People may trip if they do not use caution on these surfaces.

To prevent slips and falls, people should make sure that they always clean up spills as soon as they happen. They may also want to put up signs so that their colleagues know to use caution. Additionally, people should report worn flooring so that their supervisors can arrange for new materials.

Poor visibility

If walkways are not well-lit, workers cannot see potential tripping hazards. Additionally, people may have limited visibility if they carry too many objects at a time. To prevent accidents, people should make sure that they can always see over any load that they carry. Before they walk down a hall, they should make sure all the lights are on. If any bulbs have burned out, people should report this so that a member of the maintenance staff can replace the lightbulbs.

When every worker helps ensure that the work environment is clean and safe, people can decrease the chances of slipping and falling at work.
